A lot of the people who call us tried to handle it themselves first. They borrowed a truck, gave up a Saturday, and got about halfway through the pile. Hauling your own junk can make sense, and we’ll tell you when it does. For a real cleanout, though, the costs tend to show up in places people don’t expect.
The truck is only the first cost
Unless you already own a truck and trailer, you’ll be renting one. The hourly rentals at the home improvement stores look cheap until you add mileage, gas, and the second or third trip that most garages and basements take. A sofa, a mattress and a few boxes will fill most pickup beds.
Dropping it off takes some planning
Mecklenburg County runs four full-service drop-off centers (Compost Central, Foxhole, Hickory Grove and North Mecklenburg) that take furniture, appliances, construction debris and more. They’re open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and restrictions apply, including limits on business loads and dump trailers at some sites on Saturdays. Check the county’s Wipe Out Waste site before you load up so you don’t end up making the trip twice.
If you get City of Charlotte garbage service, the city will also pick up bulky items at the curb. You have to schedule it first through 311 or the CLT+ app, and anything put out without a scheduled pickup stays where it is. It’s a good option for one couch. It isn’t built for a whole garage.
A whole day goes fast
Loading is the slow part. Taking apart a bed frame, getting a dresser down the stairs, deciding what to keep and what to donate: it all adds up. Most DIY cleanouts take a full weekend day, and bigger ones take two. That’s time you’re not spending at work or with your family.
Heavy, awkward items are how people get hurt
Refrigerators, water heaters, sleeper sofas and hot tub panels are heavy and hard to grip. Without dollies, straps and a second set of experienced hands, it’s easy to pull your back or put a dresser through the drywall on the way out. Our crew lifts this kind of thing every day and brings the right equipment for it.
Not everything goes in the same pile
Paint, electronics, tires, appliances and yard waste each have their own rules, and some of what you’re throwing out is still good enough to donate. We sort as we load, so usable items get donated, recyclables get recycled, and only what’s left goes to the landfill.
When doing it yourself makes sense
If it’s a few bags and a chair and you have a truck, go for it. The same goes for one or two big items that the city’s bulky pickup will take. Hiring a crew pays off on the bigger jobs: full garages and sheds, move-outs, estate cleanouts, hot tubs, and anything heavy or spread across a whole property.
What it looks like when you hire us
Call or text us a few photos, or we can come take a look, and you’ll get a price up front. On the day of the job we do the lifting and loading, sweep up, and leave the space empty. Same-day appointments are often available around Charlotte, Matthews, Huntersville and the rest of the area when our schedule allows.
If you’re on the fence, call (980) 372-4475 and tell us what you’ve got. You’ll get a straight answer, even if that answer is to do it yourself.
